About the Role

O’Reilly Media is seeking a Web Developer to join the IT Operations team. This role focuses on designing and developing custom WordPress themes and plugins, creating responsive, SEO-optimized websites, and ensuring secure, scalable solutions. The position is scheduled for 20 hours per week over approximately six months.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop custom WordPress themes from scratch.
  • Build custom plugins to extend functionality.
  • Convert design mockups into responsive, WordPress-compliant themes.
  • Optimize site performance and implement SEO best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and debug WordPress websites.
  • Ensure cross-browser compatibility and mobile responsiveness.
  • Maintain and update WordPress core, plugins, and themes.
  • Implement security measures in line with WordPress coding standards.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of WordPress development experience.
  • Strong expertise in PHP, HTML5/CSS3, JavaScript, and MySQL.
  • Experience with WordPress theme and plugin development.
  • Familiarity with custom post types, taxonomies, WordPress REST API, and ACF.
  • Knowledge of Git version control and responsive design principles.
  • Understanding of SEO, web security principles, and page speed optimization.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage multiple projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Sass/LESS, modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Vue.js), and build tools (Gulp, Webpack).
  • Knowledge of WordPress Multisite.
  • Portfolio showcasing custom WordPress projects.
  • Contributions to WordPress community or open-source projects.
  • Familiarity with PERL/ModPERL.

Additional Information

  • Temporary, part-time role: 20 hours per week for 180 days (approx. 6 months).
  • Pay range: $38.46 – $48.08 per hour.
  • Employment through staffing partner HR Options.
  • Visa sponsorship or immigration support is not available.
